The gentle art of self defence.

Tonkinkan Ju-Jitsu at The Dojo — unarmed self-defence for the street, with traditional Japanese skills still on the mat. Strength is useful. Timing, locks and knowing where to strike matter more.

What is Ju-Jitsu?

Minimum effort. Maximum effect.

Ju-Jitsu today is based on unarmed self-defence. Traditional Japanese weapons are still practised — they sharpen the exponent’s skill — but the art is geared to the street: muggers, robbers, and people who treat violence as sport.

You learn to use your body against an attacker with locking techniques and precise striking. Strength need not be the prime consideration. The confidence that comes with being ready, willing and able to protect yourself becomes self-evident — and an attacker is likely to seek an easier target.

The Dojo Benoni training hall

The Dojo

A place of the way — in Benoni North.

In Japanese, dōjō (道場) means “place of the way”: a formal gathering place for training, examinations and encounters in the martial arts. Tonkinkan Ju-Jitsu is the heart of that place at 152 President Pretorius Street.

Shihan Sam Tonkin, 8th Dan, leads the art. Ask to join the WhatsApp information group, and please collect children from inside the dojo — not from the busy parking lot.

From a parent

“I don’t pay for Ju-Jitsu. I pay for the opportunities Ju-Jitsu gives my kids — attributes that will serve them throughout their lives.”
